Abstract

Background. The nasal and oral mucosa, the tongue, and the teeth are structures that can cause facial pain, as can dental treatments that lead to the onset of so-called "atypical" facial pain. The IHS classification establishes the diagnostic criteria in Chapter 13, dedicated to Cranial Neuralgia and Central Facial Pain.
Methods. A 67-year-old female patient presented with orofacial pain and right hemifacial edema following a right upper premolar avulsion due to a granuloma. Treatment with Dolomy FIBRO® 1+1 capsules/day was initiated to control the edema and orofacial pain, with neuralgic symptoms affecting the second branch of the right trigeminal nerve. The patient kept a diary of her clinical progress and, in particular, monitored her pain using a VAS (Visual Analogue Scale). Efficacy and tolerability data were also collected.
Results. The patient reported a reduction in edema after 7 days, with its elimination after 14 days of administration of Dolomy FIBRO® 1+1 capsules/day. Pain intensity in the first 14 days was significantly reduced (VAS: 8 at T0; VAS: 2 at T1 – 14 days). The patient continued therapy with Dolomy FIBRO® 1+1 capsules/day for another 60 days until the orofacial pain resolved.
Conclusions. As can be seen from the case report, Dolomy FIBRO® cps can be used to treat orofacial pain, especially in the presence of edema. Future research will explore the possibility of combining Dolomy FIBRO® cps with antiepileptic drug therapy, which is commonly used to treat typical and atypical neuralgia.
